UMHB women edged by McMurry

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dropped a 76-73 decision to McMurry University Saturday afternoon in Belton thanks to a last-minute offensive surge from the War Hawks. The win improved the War Hawks to 6-13 on the season and 2-9 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cru fell to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Turnovers plagued both teams in the first quarter as UMHB forced the War Hawks into turnovers on their first four possessions with a combined 18 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of action. McMurry led the Cru 18-14 at the end of the first quarter with Haven Neal and Kendall Rollins each leading with four points. The second quarter saw three lead changes as both teams went back and forth before UMHB used a 6-2 lead to end the first half with a 27-25 advantage. UMHB shot 37.5 percent in the first half while the War Hawks had a 27.6 percent shooting average. Both teams combined for 18 turnovers and evened at six steals each.

McMurry and UMHB both scored a team-total 24 points in the third quarter to again give UMHB a two-point advantage. UMHB led by as many as eight points in the fourth before Sham Hunter hit a three-point shot with 18 seconds left to even the contest at 72 all. Skyler Reyna hit another three-point shot for the War Hawks with five second left to put McMurry up by three. UMHB's Destini Oakmon made a free throw with 0.7 seconds left to cut the War Hawks lead to just two points but Reyna went 1-2 at the line with 0.3 left on the clock to put the Cru in a three-point deficit. UMHB was not able to get a shot at the buzzer, falling 76-73.

Kendra Wynn led UMHB with 20 points followed by Kendall Rollins with 17. Oakmon and Meghan Turner each recorded four assists as the Cru totaled 17 in the contest. Defensively, UMHB recorded six blocks and nine steals, forcing the War Hawks into 24 turnovers. Wynn was also UMHB's leading rebounder with nine as the Cru outrebounded McMurry 43-40.

Reyna led all War Hawks with 20 points followed by Hunter with 18 and Rhiana Jones with 11. McMurry totaled 15 assists, three blocks and 12 steals. Reyna also led the War Hawks in boards with 14. McMurry shot 43.9 percent in the contest, 31.8 percent from beyond the arc and 64.7 percent from the free throw line. UMHB hit 38.1 percent of their shots, going 14.3 percent in three-pointers and 76.7 percent in free throws.

UMHB returns to action Saturday, February 4th in a 1 p.m. match against Concordia University Texas at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
