KEUKA PARK, N.Y.. – The Keuka College Women's Basketball team defeated Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center by the score of 59-51.
The Chargers entered Saturday with a perfect 10-0 record in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.
Keuka College (8-7, 5-5 NEAC) concludes their weekend on Sunday as the Wolves host Penn St.-Berks at 1pm.
The Green and Gold were led by sophomore Lauren Anten (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton). The Rochester native scored a team-leading 17 points in the win. Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, N.Y. / Tupper Lake) and Sam Laranjo (Averill Park, N.Y. / Averill Park) each finished with 12 points for the Wolves. Stuart added seven rebounds and Laranjo added six assists. Leading Keuka College in rebounding was Sarah Tyler (Newark, N.Y. / Newark). The sophomore grabbed nine boards and also added nine points and three blocks.
Lancaster Bible took the early lead over Keuka College in the first quarter, but the Wolves never let the margin get too wide. Five times Keuka tied the game, but Lancaster Bible had an answer every time as they led 16-14 after the first.
Sam Laranjo opened the second with a jumper to tie the game, but once again, Lancaster took the lead back following a three pointer. Sophomore Lauren Anten made a pair of baskets to give Keuka their first lead of the game, 20-19. Scoring slowed in the quarter. The Wolves were held without a field goal for nearly four minutes, but they played good defense themselves. Keuka held Lancaster Bible to just 18.8% from the floor in the quarter. At the halftime break, Lancaster remained ahead 27-24.
Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter. Lancaster got on the board first at the 7:47 mark. It took Keuka until 6:37 of the quarter, but it was a big shot. Left with an inbounds play with little time on the shot clock, the pass went long to Sarah Tyler. The sophomore sank the deep three pointer, her first of the season, to bring the margin back to two, 29-27. With less than a minute in the quarter, the Chargers missed a free throw. Courtney Boyea (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay) grabbed the rebound and out-ran the entire Lancaster team as she converted the fast break layup to tie the game at 36-36.
Lancaster Bible scored first to start the fourth quarter with a three pointer, but Keuka went on a run. The Wolves scored the next seven points as Katie Stuart had a layup and a three. The run was capped by an Abby Hess (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland) layup to give Keuka a 43-39 lead. It was now Keuka's turn to control the game. Each time Lancaster scored, the Wolves had an answer on the other end. Two points would be as close as the Chargers would make it over the final six minutes of play as Keuka College defeated Lancaster Bible College 59-51.
