Women's Basketball Triumphs Over CCNY Beavers (66-59)

The women's basketball team battled the CCNY Beavers in a CUNYAC matchup on Saturday afternoon in the ARC Arena.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth contest as the Bearcats were down, 23-20. They were able to suffocate the Beavers in the second quarter, holding them to only six points to lead 32-29 at halftime.

The Beavers surged back into the game midway through the fourth quarter as they brought the game within one point (55-54) with 5:24 left.

With 4:52 left in the fourth quarter,
Shannon Barrettgrabbed a key defensive rebound and was fouled. After two clutch free throws by Barrett and a three-pointer by Veronica Ganzi, the Bearcats never looked back gaining a six-point lead (60-54).

With 1:30 left,
Daniela Ariashit a jumper to raise the lead to nine, ending all hope for the Beavers. A late three-pointer by Debra Chan cut the lead to six, but the defensive effort by the Bearcats halted any comeback.

The Beavers had many second chance opportunities with 17 offensive rebounds, but they failed to capitalize by shooting 28.2 percent from the field. Erika Richards lead the visiting Beavers with 13 points.

Barrett had her third straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Kristen Podlovitsled the team with 21 points and seven assists. Maria Myrianthopoulosscoredeight points (4-for-6 fg).

The Bearcats are now 9-10 overall with an 8-3 record in CUNYAC. They travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College on Tuesday, January 31 at 5 p.m.
