ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (10-5) outscored visiting SUNY Cobleskill 37-16 in the second half to pull away for a 65-40 victory over the Fighting Tigers Wednesday night at Lambros Arena The victory is Hartwick's seventh in row, which ties for the seventh-longest unbeaten streak in program history. The Hawks' 10 victories also tops last season's win total.
Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby), Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland), and Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) all reached double figures in scoring for the Hawks. Stone led all scorers with 18 points. Corbett added 15 and Johnson finished the night with 13.
The first half was a close one with the lead changing hands five times with five tie scores. The Tigers jumped in front by scoring the first five points. After a Stone layup, neither team would lead by more than three for the remainder of the first quarter. A Johnson layup with just over a minute left with put Hartwick in front 11-9 after 10 minutes.
Four straight Corbett points to start the second quarter pushed the 'Wick advantage to six, 15-9, but six in a row for Cobleskill evened the game at 15-15. After an 18-18 tie, the two teams traded leads before Stone would give the Hawks' the advantage for the rest of night at 3:53 with a bucket. It sparked an 8-0 Hartwick run for a seven-point edge before Cobleskill got the final basket to trim it to 28-24 at halftime.
The Hartwick lead grew to 10 at three different points in the third quarter until a Stone layup with 27 ticks remaining pushed the lead to 11 points, 43-32, heading into the final quarter. The Hawks put the game away with a 12-0 run to start the fourth period. Four different Hawks dropped in points in the run as they built a 22-point lead. The advantage surged to 27 points with just over a minute to play as the Hawks closed out the victory.
The Hawks shot 46% from the floor making 25 of their 54 shots in the contest. They also dominated in the paint, 36-12. They held the visitors to 26% (14-for-54) shooting in the game with both teams finishing even in rebounds, 38-all.
Stone hit a pair of three-pointers while contributing five rebounds and tying for a game-high with five assists. Corbett contributed three boards and two assists with Johnson adding two threes and a pair of steals.
Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) added six points, a team-high seven boards, and a game-high four steals for the Hawks. Liz Harvey (Berne, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerloo) chipped in with five points and Sarah Shaw (Franklin, MA/Franklin) had three points, six rebounds, and two assists.
Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) had two points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) contributed three points and six boards.
Ashley Creighton was the lone Fighting Tiger in double figures with 11 points. Addy Lawson had nine points, five rebounds, and five assists. Shelby Preston nearly registered a double-double with eight points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Hartwick next travels to Rochester for back-to-back Empire 8 games. The Hawks oppose St. John Fisher Friday followed by Nazareth on Saturday.
