No. 7 Hope Women's Basketball Wins At No. 24 Trine

Tyra Smith scored seven of her team-high 14 points during the fourth quarter to help the No. 7-ranked Hope College women's basketball team claim a 76-65 win at No. 24 Trine on Wednesday.

The junior guard from Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian HS) helped the Flying Dutch outscore their host 18-11 over the final 10 minutes and secure outright possession of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association lead.

Hope (16-1 overall) completed the first half of MIAA play with an 8-0 record. The Flying Dutch lead Trine (14-2 overall) by one game after snapping the Thunder's 13-game win streak.

Hope forced 26 turnovers to earn a significant 36-13 edge in points off turnovers.

Senior forward Mandy Traversa of Winfield, Illinois (Wheaton North) and junior guard Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central) contributed to a balanced Flying Dutch offense with 13 points apiece.

Sophomore forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta) added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Hope overcame a 33-point effort from Trine guard Brandi Dawson, who shot 12-of-17 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 with a 3 p.m. game at Adrian.
