UMHB women fall to Concordia Texas 72-60

Austin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team erased a double-digit first quarter deficit, but could not manage a similar comeback in the fourth period as the Cru dropped a 72-60 decision at Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Austin. The loss drops the UMHB women to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Tornados improve to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in the ASC with the win.

Concordia jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the early going and went up 20-8 late in the first before UMHB battled back. The Cru closed to within one point on Kendra Wynn's lay-up late in the second period and trailed 31-29 at halftime. Kendall Rollins opened the second half with a three-pointer to give UMHB a 32-31 lead and the two teams traded the lead several times. Tashyra Banks hit two free throws and Wynn added a lay-in to give the Cru its biggest lead of the game at 46-43 with 3:11 to go in the third. Concordia answered with an 11-0 and would lead by six entering the fourth quarter. UMHB would not get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Tornados pulled away late.

Wynn led the Cru with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Meghan Turner added nine points and four assists. UMHB shot just 9-39 from the field in the second half and shot just 26 percent from the floor overall as a team. The Cru did out rebound Concordia 49-43, but shot just 5-19 from three-point range in the loss.

Emily Cullers led a balanced scoring effort for the Tornados with 21 points and she added seven rebounds. Jaela Dejean added 18 points and Raven Cato and Mercedes Ellison chipped in ten points apiece. Concordia shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and hit 43 percent overall. The Tornados also went 10-26 from beyond the arc.

UMHB will return to action with a 3:00 PM start at U.T. Dallas in Richardson on Monday. The Cru will continue its four-game road trip with contests at Sul Ross State University and Howard Payne University next Thursday and Saturday.
