Cortland Women Use Quick Start to Take Care of Potsdam, 71-45

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Cortland raced out to first-quarter leads of 12-0 and 20-3 on its way to a decisive 71-45 victory at Potsdam in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) led Cortland (6-8, 5-2 SUNYAC) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and she matched her career high with four assists. She hit 7-of-10 field goals and all three of her free throws, and also blocked two shots. Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) connected on four 3-point shots in six attempts and finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) and Tanna Mohammed (Huntington/Elwood-John Glenn) each added nine points. Vitucci was 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Mohammed was 4-for-4 from the foul line in just nine minutes of action off the bench, and her nine points ties her career best. Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) chipped in with six rebounds and four assists.

Abbey LaPage finished with 11 points for Potsdam (1-10, 0-7 SUNYAC), which is led by first-year head coach and former Cortland standout guard Brittany Cohen. Drew Dufrane scored nine points, while Patti Dorgler led the Bears with eight rebounds. LaPage and Dufrane each made three 3-pointers.

Chapko scored five points and Crosby four during Cortland's opening 12-point run in the game's first four-plus minutes. Potsdam finally broke through with a LaPage 3-pointer at the 5:16 mark of the quarter, but a Vitucci 3-pointer, Crosby layup and Taylor Miller (Freeport) 3-pointer pushed the lead to 20-3 with 2:41 left.

Cortland led 22-8 after one quarter and 39-16 at halftime. The lead was as high as 33 points twice in the second half. Cortland shot 42 percent from the floor, which included 50 percent accuracy (10-of-20) from the 3-point arc. The Red Dragons held Potsdam to 23 percent overall from the floor.

Cortland will travel to Plattsburgh Saturday for a 4 p.m. league game.
