Haverford Surges Late to Stop Bullets

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College used a 20-6 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to turn the tide against Gettysburg College and pull out a 60-55 victory inside Gooding '84 Arena Tuesday night.
 
Gettysburg (8-3, 4-2 CC) led 41-32 following a lay-up by junior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) with 3:10 to go in the third quarter. Haverford (6-4, 4-2 CC) ran off a 14-4 spurt to take its first lead since midway through the first quarter. Junior Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) dropped in a lay-up to regain the lead for the Bullets, but three-straight lay-ups gave the Fords the lead for good with two minutes to play.
 
Freshman Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) reached double-figures for the third consecutive game with a season-high 16 points. Sophomore Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) dropped in 13 points, while Gibbons finished with eight points and 14 rebounds.
 
Sierra Berkel scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for Haverford. Samantha Wetzel posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards, while Anna-Sophia Capizzi logged 10 points off the bench.
 
Trailing 7-5, the Bullets took control with a nine-point run into the first minute of the second quarter. Gettysburg's lead grew to 21-13 following a three-pointer and lay-up by Gehrin with three minutes left in the first half.
 
After combining for just 47 points in the first half, the offense picked up in the third quarter as the two squads put up 42 in the frame. Gettysburg controlled the early going, but Haverford weathered the run to seize momentum by the end of the quarter.
 
Haverford out-rebounded Gettysburg 47-40 and made the most of the Bullets' miscues by netting 15 points off turnovers. The Fords shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the floor, while the Bullets finished at 35.4 percent (23-of-65).
 
A home date with Muhlenberg College (8-4, 6-2 CC) awaits Gettysburg on Thursday at 8 p.m.
