Moore Leads RIC Past Southern Maine, 60-57

Gorham, Maine--Senior guard Alex More (West Newbury, MA) scored a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists to lead the Rhode Island College women's basketball team to a 60-57 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference contest played at Fifield Court on Wednesday evening.

 

RIC (5-9, 2-2 LEC) freshman forward Victoria Demers (Sutton, MA), the reigning LEC Rookie of the Week, added 14 points and five rebounds, while classmate guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) was also in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

 

Southern Maine (2-12, 1-3 LEC) was led by sophomore guard Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec) with 14 points and three rebounds, while freshman forward Chantel Eels (Turner, ME) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. Freshman guard Hannah Clement (Orono, ME) tallied 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the setback.

 

RIC took control of the game early, racing out to a 15-2 lead after a three-pointer by Moore with 5:04 left in the first quarter. The Anchorwomen posted a commanding 17-4 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. The Anchorwomen led by as many as 15 points early in the second quarter before taking a 25-17 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. 

 

Southern Maine chipped away at the lead early in the third quarter and closed to within two points when a three-pointer by Clement made the score 29-27 with 6:34 left in the stanza.  The Huskies continued to cut into the RIC lead and took their first lead of the game, 41-40, on a three-pointer by junior guard Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) with less than a minute left in the frame. RIC held to a one-point, 42-41, lead after three quarters of play.

 

The Huskies used a 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter and take a 48-42 lead on a jumper by Srolovitz with 8:57 left in the contest. RIC responded and regained the lead after a layup by Demers with 3:13 put the Anchorwomen up by one, 53-52. The two teams then traded baskets with RIC up, 58-57, with thirty seconds remaining. The Anchorwomen then sealed the victory with a pair of free throws by Gauvin to take the 60-57 victory.

 

RIC shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from behind the three-point stripe and 66.7 percent (22-of-33) from the free throw line. Southern Maine shot 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from the three-point line and 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will continue Little East Conference action at home against Keene State on Saturday, Jan. 14 (1 p.m.).
