POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 10, 2017) — The Vassar College women's basketball team (6-8, 3-2 Liberty) rewrote the record book with a 101-31 victory over Bard College (0-11, 0-3 Liberty) at the Athletics & Fitness Center on Tuesday.
The Brewers broke the program record for points in a game with 101 (previous: 95 in 2009), field goals in a game with 45 (previous: 38 in 2002) and assists in a game with 31 (previous: 27 in 2016).
The Brewers shot 54.2 percent from the floor, which is the fourth-highest in program history, and 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from three, while holding their visitors to 34.0 and 0.0 percent (0-of-6), respectively.
Not only were the Brewers historic on offense, they broke records on defense, grabbing a program-high 51 boards to Bard's 24. The Brewers also registered 25 steals, the third-most in program history, on their way to forcing the Raptors into 36 turnovers.
The historic night was a team effort, as every Brewer to see the floor scored at least four points and all but one registered at least one assist.
"This was a great team win for us," coach Candice Brown said. "Our kids had fun working hard. I really wanted us to focus on us today and really execute on the offensive end and get after it on the defensive end, and we did that."
Six Brewers reached double-digit scoring, as Sabrina Ulsh had a career-high 14 points, Maddie Leong added a career-best 13, Sophie Nick contributed 12 and Isa Peczuh tallied 11, while Nicole Teta and Jackie Cenan each finished with 10.
Meanwhile, Annie Kissel led Bard with 18 points as the only Raptor to reach double figures in the scoring column.
Playing in front of their home crowd, the Brewers quickly jumped out to a 20-2 advantage. Rosenthal highlighted the run with back-to-back jumpers before draining a triple about a minute later.
Toward the end of the quarter, Bard found a bit of a groove, scoring five points over the final 2:09.
Vassar responded with a 25-0 run over the first and second period to take a 47-7 lead with 1:10 remaining in the half. Leong found her stride during the surge, hitting back-to-back buckets on two separate occasions. The first pair of baskets featured a steal-and-score and a jumper to highlight the run.
"Maddie Leong definitely stood out to me," Brown said. "She worked really hard containing their point guard. Their point guard's the only three-pointer shooter they have, and we didn't give up one three-pointer to her. We forced her to have 14 turnovers, and I was happy with the defensive pressure that Maddie was able to apply to her, which also created turnovers and gave us points on the other end."
Bard scored the only point of the quarter on Kissel's free throw before Ulsh ended the half with a layup for the Brewers to carry a 49-8 edge into the break.
The sides traded baskets to start the new half before Vassar ended the third quarter on a 24-8 run. Romanoff continued the run into the final frame, opening the quarter with consecutive buckets.
Vassar and Bard went back and forth until about midway through the half when Julia Roellke sparked a 14-4 run to end the game. On the game's final basket, Nick hit a layup to put the Brewers over the century mark for the first time in program history.
Vassar next concludes its homestand this weekend, welcoming Clarkson University to the Athletics & Fitness Center on Friday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. before hosting St. Lawrence University the next day at 2 p.m.
