Tigers Fall to Cal Lutheran

LOS ANGELES — Erin Matsumoto scored 19 points, leading four Occidental women's basketball players in double figures.

But the Tigers couldn't make it two upsets in a row, losing 83-69 to a good Cal Lutheran squad at Rush Gym on Saturday. 

After beating defending SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in its first SCIAC game of the year, Oxy hung with the Regals, which are picked to finish No. 3 in the conference, until a 7-0 run at the beginning of the third quarter upped the lead to double figures. The Regals led by as many as 19 points in the quarter, finishing the third up 65-51.

Matsumoto went 8 for 13 from the field and also had a team-high six rebounds and four assists. 

Midori McElwee and Shariah Green chipped in 14 points, and Tala Ismail added 12 for the Tigers.

Sofia Cruz scored a game-high 22 points to lead Cal Lutheran.

Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play. 

Cal Lutheran improves to 5-6 and 1-0.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Jan. 3 against La Sierra.
