SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 28, 2016) – Despite making 47.3 percent of its shots and three players in double figures, the Sewanee women's basketball team came up just short in an 85-76 loss to rival Washington & Lee, Wednesday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

Additionally, the Tigers made 47.1 percent of their three-point attempts and hit 72.7 percent of their free throws. Despite all this, W&L used a 19-10 run the final four minutes of the game to slowly pull away.

Early on, Sewanee jumped out to a 12-9 lead after a layup by Hannah McCormack and a three by Corey Caulder. After back-to-back threes by Emily Perszyk, W&L took its second lead when Taylor Casey knocked down a third straight three.

After six lead changes and multiple ties, W&L took a seven-point lead, 40-33, into halftime after the Generals outscored the Tigers 9-2 the final 1:35 of the second quarter.

From there, Sewanee pulled to within a possession three times early in the third quarter before a three by Caulder with 4:53 left tied the contest at 47-47. W&L answered with five straight points from Andrea Ferrero. After a pair of Emma Redding free throws, the Tigers were down 10, 64-54, at the end of the third.

In the final frame, Sewanee responded. After three free throws from Caulder, Bella Taylor scored four straight points. After a W&L missed three, McCormack's layup with 6:22 cut the Generals' lead to three, 66-63. Unfortunately, W&L answered after a timeout with a three by Perszyk and a pair of free throws from Jackie Clifford. Sewanee got to within a possession, 75-72, with 2:50 left, however W&L limited Sewanee down the stretch.

Individually, Taylor led the Tigers with 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting. She also added four rebounds and a steal despite playing with foul trouble most of the game. Along with Taylor, Caulder added 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three blocks while McCormack pitched in 16 points, three rebounds, an assist, and two blocks.

Finally, Sue Kim scored eight points and had three assists to go along with three steals.

Perszyk led all players for W&L with a game-high 24 points and five assists. She was joined in double figures by Casey (15), Clifford (13), Ferrero (11), and Aily Kelly (10).

Sewanee returns to action with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Muskingum on Thursday.
