Marietta outlasts Washington and Jefferson 66-62

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College women's basketball team scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed as the Pioneers defeated Washington and Jefferson College 66-62 Tuesday (Dec. 20) afternoon. Marietta wraps up its nonconference schedule with a 7-4 overall record. The Presidents slip to 5-3 on the season.

Junior Brooke Borich was 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final minute of the game to secure the Pioneer victory. Borich Marietta with 16 points. Shay Lett scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Jo Herd-Middlebrooks and Alexis Enochs each chipped in with eight points.

After Marietta jumped out to the early 9-0 lead, Washington and Jefferson battled back and got within three points, 11-8. But the Presidents failed to score over the final 2:38 of the first quarter and Marietta led 16-8 heading into the second period.

The Pioneers used a 12-3 run in the second quarter to push their lead to 15 points, 30-15, with 55 seconds left in the first half. Marietta took a 30-17 advantage into halftime.

Lett drained a three-pointer midway through the third quarter to give Marietta an 18-point lead, 40-22, it's biggest of the day. The Presidents ended the third period on a 15-8 run trimming the deficit to 11 points, 48-37.

W&J continued the run scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter and cutting the Pioneer lead to seven points, 48-41, with 6:48 left in the game. Trailing by six, the President bench was whistled for a technical foul with 43 seconds left.

Borich hit one of the two free throws from the technical. The Pioneers then inbounded the ball and Borich was quickly fouled. She sank both freebies extending the MC lead to nine points, 64-55, with 38 seconds left.

W&J's Danielle Parker hit a three-pointer and then the Presidents forced a Marietta turnover and a foul sending Taylor Cortazzo to the line with nine seconds remaining. Cortazzo hit both free throws making it 64-60.

The Presidents were forced to foul and Borich iced the game with two more free throws for a six-point lead, 66-60. W&J scored a layup as time ran out.

Amirah Moore led the Presidents with 16 points. Cortazzo finished with 10 points, while Parker added nine points and a game-high 22 rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 35.8% (19-of-53) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 75.9% (22-of-29) at the free throw line. Washington and Jefferson was 20-of-61 (32.8%) from the floor, 3-of-20 (15.0%) behind the arc and 19-of-21 (90.5%) at the line.

The Presidents won the battle of the boards, 46-33. W&J turned the ball over 17 times, while Marietta committed 14 turnovers.

Marietta kicks off 2017 against rival Muskingum University on Wednesday (Jan. 4) at 7:30 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
