Gwynedd Mercy Women Down Alvernia Behind Career-High From Kucowski

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Behind a career-high 33 points from Charlotte Kucowski, Gwynedd Mercy played its final home game before the winter break and came away with a 74-61 win over Alvernia Monday night.

Kucowski was 13-of-19 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from downtown. The senior added 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double on the season and filled out the stat sheet with four assists, two blocks, and two steals. Nicole Dombrowski poured in 17 points and seven caroms for the Griffins (4-5).

Maya Cooper netted 23 for the Crusaders (0-10) while Kiersten Ingram chipped in 13 and Liv Andrefski contributed 11.

After a three from Kucowski in the first for a 3-2 lead, Alvernia put up eight-straight points and held a lead of seven. Dombrowski pulled off a crucial steal later in the stanza to put the momentum back on Gwynedd's side and start a big 17-1 run. Jayla Greene would later pull off a stellar steal to feed Kucowski for a driving layup and the Griffins got within two. Greene and Kucowski repeated their play moments later to tie things up at 11-11. Kucowski would thread a fantastic pass to Chyanne Fine under the basket gave the Griffins the lead.  Greene would cap the scoring spree, sinking a three pointer with 1:19 in the period for a 20-11 edge.  Andrefski would complete a three-point play to end the first quarter at 20-14.

The second quarter started off with low scoring as there were just two field goals in the first 2:45.  But Dombrowski would up the lead to double digits with her bucket underneath and later a three from Kucowski put GMercyU up 38-23 with 2:27 before the half. Alvernia would cut it to a 39-27 lead at halftime.

Gwynedd was held to their lowest total of the night in the third, 14 points, but still would lead the Crusaders, 53-42, entering the fourth. In the final quarter, Alvernia would get as close as 60-51 off a three from Cooper with 6:50 left in the game, but Kucowski would hit for the fourth time from downtown on the next possession to restore the double-digit lead for good. 

Greene finished the night with six points, four boards, three assists, and three steals in 21 minutes off the bench. Fine would tie a personal-best with six points. Bianca Adams scored just five points, but she handed out a career-high 10 assists. Gwynedd shot 44% (28-of-63) from the floor and turned 23 Alvernia turnovers into 36 points.

The Griffins head to Florida next week to take on Susquehanna on Wednesday, December 28th in Daytona Beach as part of the Land of Magic Classic. On Thursday, the 29th, Gwynedd will take on Mary Washington. The team doesn't return to The Griffin Complex until Saturday, January 7th, 2017 when they host Centenary.
