SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 10, 2016) – Head coach Dickie McCarthy earned career win 100 and sophomore guard Corey Caulder scored a career-high 26 points as the Sewanee women's basketball team defeated Berea 79-70, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
McCarthy, who is already Sewanee's career leader in wins, earned his third victory this season and the Tigers' first win at home this year. Saturday marked the first home game of the 2016-17 season for the Tigers after starting the first seven games on the road.
After a close first quarter, Sewanee started to roll. The Tigers outscored Berea 22-13 in the second 10 minutes. During that stretch, Caulder and Savannah Rose combined for 13 points. In fact, Caulder was red-hot in the first half. The sophomore guard scored 17 points by halftime on 6-of-7 shooting.
With Sewanee leading by eight, 37-29, after a pair of Katie Roth free throws, Hannah McCormackdrilled a corner three as time expired which pushed the Tiger lead to 11.
Out of the locker room, Berea rallied. Behind a 10-0 advantage in free throws over the next 12 minutes, Berea retook its first lead since midway in the first quarter. Five straight points from Bethanie Williams gave Berea a five-point lead, 61-56, with 8:20 to play.
However, Sewanee answered right back. Six straight points by Bella Taylor, and points from McCormack and Caulder, gave the lead back to Sewanee at 67-61 with 5:57 left.
From there, Sewanee never looked back. The Tigers finished the game on a 12-9 run.
Overall, Sewanee played great on both ends of the floor. The Tigers' defense forced 22 turnovers and limited Berea to a 37.9 field goal percentage. Comparably, Sewanee made 46 percent of its shots, which included a 43.3 mark for shots taken beyond the three-point line.
Sewanee also finished with 24 assists on 29 made field goals.
Along with Caulder, McCormack, Rose, and Taylor all finished in double figures. McCormack scored 17 points while Rose added 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Taylor finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Point guard Sue Kim, the other starter, added a point, four rebounds, and seven assists.
Bri Lanham led Berea with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. contest against rival Washington & Lee on Wednesday, December 28.
