MADISON, N.J. (Dec. 8, 2016) - The upperclassmen dominated for the Drew University women's basketball team as they rolled past Centenary (N.J.) College, 51-40, in a non-conference matchup in Baldwin Gym on Thursday night.
By The Numbers: Drew improves to 3-4 on the year while Centenary drops to 6-2. The Rangers snapped a four-game win streak by the Cyclones and put an end to their own three-game skid.
Top Performers: Senior Sam Lane put together another fantastic outing, scoring 21 points to up her season average to 15.6 points per game. She added nine rebounds and four steals in the victory. Junior Aly Raulf scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, pulling in five rebounds to go with four steals. Junior guardMichaela Keegan recorded nine points, five boards and four steals.
Turning Point: The Cyclones were able to hang with the Rangers for the entirety of the first half with the score set at 21-19 in Drew's favor. As soon as the third quarter began, however, the Rangers started to control the contest with a 15-9 run in the period to bring their lead to eight. The Rangers never looked back as they continued their second-half dominance all the way through the final buzzer.
Highlights
• A 7-0 Cyclone run put the visitors up 17-16 with 2:05 to play in the first half. Free throws by Raulf and senior guardCourtney Trzasko helped Drew tie it at 19-19 before Lane rushed the paint with time running to convert a floater at the buzzer for the slim halftime advantage.
• Drew took a 28-23 lead at the 3:46 mark on Raulf's first career three-pointer, which was also made on her first career three-point attempt close to the shot clock expiring.
• Back-to-back triples from Lane put Drew up 34-26 with 1:47 to play in the third. Her third 3-pointer of the game came on Drew's first possession of the fourth period to give the Rangers their first double-digit lead of the game.
• Despite a three-point play by Centenary's leading scorer, Mallory George, the Rangers maintained a comfortable cushion down the stretch on three-pointers by Keegan and sophomore Hailey Stine.
Stat Sheet: Lane's nine rebounds helped the Rangers to 31, but were eventually outmuscled on the boards, 45-31. Drew capitalized on the Cyclones' 26 turnovers, scoring 26 points off them, thanks in large part to Drew's 17 steals. Drew took better care of the ball, turning the ball over 16 times compared to Centenary's 26. Drew shot 32 percent on the night with six 3-point shots, while Centenary shot 25 percent from the field with two 3-point field goals.
