Trine Cruises Past Saint Mary's for Fifth-Straight Win

NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The Trine women's basketball team picked up its second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association win on Wednesday with a commanding 83-34 win over Saint Mary's

With the victory, the Thunder lengthened its win streak to five games and is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Saint Mary's fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 MIAA. The win also marked the third time this season that Trine has scored over 80 points. Holding the Belles to a season opponent low of 34 points, Trine claimed its largest margin of victory at 49 points.

The Thunder quickly jumped out to the lead to open the first quarter, and the strong Trine defense kept Saint Mary's from making a field goal for the first 6:59. Trine went on to outscore the Belles 22-7 in the quarter. The Thunder added 17 points in the second and added identical 22 point tallies in the third and fourth.

Trine showed off its tremendous depth once again with 12 players adding points to the stat sheet.  It was the sixth time in seven games that the team has had more than 10 players score in a game.

Junior Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) joined freshman Katy Steers (Portage, Ind./Portage) in leading the team with 14 points apiece. Martin has reached double digits in points in every game this season. The junior added eight rebounds, and with two blocks, moved into fifth place in the Trine record books with 56 career blocks. Steers went five for seven in field goals and added a career high seven rebounds as well. Sophomore Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) totaled a season high 11 rebounds for the Thunder and pitched in eight points. Sophomore Shelby Oldham (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) grabbed a career high seven points for the Thunder as well. Freshman Tashayla Sutorius (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) matched her season high of nine points.

The Belles were led by Gabby Diamond with a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ally Steve also added nine points for Saint Mary's.

The Thunder continues MIAA action this weekend when it travels to Albion for a Saturday afternoon contest. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
