Ravens Suffer First Defeat of The Season at Wesley

DOVER – The Rosemont Ravens Women's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the season to the Wesley College Wolverines 72-59. With the loss Rosemont fell to 1-1, while Wesley improved to 3-1.

The scoring started 27 seconds in when Wesley's Brionna Johnson knocked down a three pointer. Rosemont's Shirle Brown picked up the Ravens first basket 20 seconds later making it 3-2. With the game tied at 8-8, Rosemont outscored the Wolverines 7-4 over the final 4:51 to lead 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Wesley began the second quarter with a lot of energy and used a 9-2 run to jump in front of the Ravens 21-17. Rosemont did not trail for long as they came firing back with a 7-0 run ending in a Brown free throw to regain the lead at 24-21. The quarter of runs continued with the Wolverines using a 6-2 spurt at the end of the half to go to the locker room with a 27-26 lead.

The third quarter the teams went back and forth. Another Brown basket tied the game at 41-41 with 1:39 left. A layup by Jasmyn Parker with 23 seconds to go put the Ravens ahead going to the fourth 45-44.

In the final frame, the Wolverines came out on fire and a free throw from Tiyanna Gibbs ended a 22-8 run in a span of 8:26 to give Wesley a 66-53 lead. With the lead at 13 the Ravens could never close the deficit to under ten and left Dover defeated by a final of 72-59.

Shirle Brown led Rosemont with 28 points and 9 rebounds. Freshman Ke'alohilani Naone-Carterwas the other Raven in double figures with 12 points.

The biggest stat of the game is how many points the Ravens left on the floor going only 11-30 on the foul line, while Wesley was 19-30.  

Rosemont will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Media, Pennsylvania to take on Penn State-Brandywine.  Tipoff is scheduled for 1pm.
