ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine women's basketball team beat Heidelberg University 75-43 Wednesday night in Hershey Hall.
After trailing for a brief time early in the first, the Thunder dominated for the rest of the game. Trine's offense exploded for a 23-0 run over an 11:37 stretch through parts the first and second quarter. The Thunder held Heidelberg without a field goal across a 14 minute period in the first half. Trine improved to 4-1 on the season, while Heidelberg fell to 1-3.
Eleven different players scored for the Thunder in the rout, led by Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) with 14 points apiece. Martin added nine rebounds and two blocks, while Dawson also notched a pair of blocks. Ashley Elliott (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) notched 11 points.
Shelby Oldham (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) had a season-high four assists, and Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) had a career high eight points.
Cassidy Frank paced the Student Princes with 11 points, and Maggie Devault scored 10. Carli Patrick had eight boards for Heidelberg.
Trine dominated Heidelberg in most statistical categories, especially points in the paint with 30 to the Student Princes six. The Thunder also converted 20 Heidelberg turnovers into 27 points. Trine shot 51.7 percent from the field (30-of-58), topping the 50 percent mark for the second straight game.
Trine's lockdown defense held Heidelberg to a 22 percent effort from the field (13-of-59). The Thunder held Heidelberg to three made field goals and 12 total points in the middle two quarters. That included one made field goal in the third quarter.
The Thunder women return to action Saturday, December 3, when they open up conference play at home against Olivet. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
