DECORAH, Iowa -- Visiting Alverno College dropped a nonconference game to Luther College, 86-62, Monday night inside the Regents Center Gymnasium.

A Mackenzie Mathies 3-pointer at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter tied the game at 8-8, but the host Norse (2-3) closed the period on a 12-6 run and would remain ahead the remainder of the game.

Luther scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to take a 51-26 lead which put the contest out of reach for the Inferno (1-4).

Alverno shot 41 percent from the 3-point arc and made 19 free throws at a season-best 76 percent clip, but surrendered 33 points off 19 turnovers to the Norse.

Mathies led the Inferno in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from long range. K.D. Jones, Mollie Mikyska and Donna Zehner each scored 11, while Zehner led the team with seven rebounds.

Katie Waller led Luther with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting but was the lone Norse in double figures on the night.

Next up, Alverno returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Saturday at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. downtown at the Kern Center.
