Fast Start Helps Babson Down Connecticut College, 79-70

NEW LONDON, CONN.—Senior Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) scored 25 points and junior Brenna LeGacy (Attleboro, Mass.) added a career-high 23 as visiting Babson College defeated Connecticut College, 79-70, in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Luce Fieldhouse.

With the win, Babson is now 2-1 on the year, while Connecticut College suffers its first loss to fall to 3-1.

Pickering chipped in with six rebounds and four assists, while LeGacy went 9-of-11 from the field and pulled down eight boards for the Beavers. Senior Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, classmate Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) led all players with 11 boards and sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Skaneateles, N.Y.) dished out a career-high six assists in the win.

First-year Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) scored 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while junior Mariead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Camels.

The Green and White opened the game with a 21-6 run and led by 12 at the end of the first quarter behind 19 combined points from LeGacy and Pickering. Connecticut College got within 22-19 on a pair of free throws by senior Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) with 7:05 to go in the second quarter, but the Beavers responded with a 16-3 run, keyed by six points from LeGacy, to push their advantage to 38-22 at the break.

Babson scored on five of its first seven possessions to being the third quarter and extended its lead to 50-30 on a three-pointer by Lane at the 6:37 mark. The Camels pulled within 10 on an Ashton layup early in the fourth quarter, but Pickering and LeGacy combined for six consecutive points following a free throw by Lane to help the Green and White push its margin back to 67-52 with 5:49 left.

Connecticut College got as close as 67-58 on a Malman jumper with 4:39 remaining, but Lane buried a three-pointer on the next possession and Babson drained seven free throws over the final 1:39 to seal the win.

The Beavers shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) and dominated the glass for the third consecutive game, finishing with a 53-32 edge.

The Camels shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) overall, but were just 5-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson opens conference play at Wheaton, while Connecticut College travels to Worcester State.
