UW-La Crosse Rallies for Win over Simpson

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 68-58 victory over Simpson College (Iowa) Saturday night in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.  The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season while the Storm drop to 1-2.

UWL scored the first 10 points of the game Saturday with MaKenzie Miller scoring six points and Elise DeNoyer four.  The Eagles led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.  Simpson (Iowa) used a 15-2 run to start the second quarter to take a 26-19 advantage after Noreen Morrow's three-point play with 5:52 left.  After DeNoyer hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 26-20 with 5:35 remaining, the Storm scored the next six points to take their largest lead of the game at 32-20 with 3:28 left. 

The Eagles responded with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 34-33 with :35 remaining in the quarter on a Rachel Atchison three-pointer.  Simpson (Iowa) led 36-33 at halftime.

UWL took a 37-36 lead with 7:08 left in the third quarter after DeNoyer's layup, but Simpson (Iowa) went on a 10-0 run to lead 46-37 with 4:13 remaining. The Storm led 54-44 late in the quarter before Delaney Schoenenberger's jumper with :11 remaining cut the lead to 54-46 at the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles opened the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run to lead 60-54 with 5:04 remaining on a Schoenenberger three-pointer.  A pair of Morrow free throws cut the lead to 60-56 with 4:29 left, but Simpson (Iowa) could get no closer the rest of the game as Schoenenberger hit a three-point field goal and layup to make it 65-56. 

UWL shot 39.7% from the field, including 50.0% (nine-of-18) from three-point range, and 72.2% (13-of-18) at the free throw line.  Schoenenberger led the Eagles with a career-high 24 points off the bench with 21 coming in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter. She finished eight-of-12 from the field, including six-of-eight from three-point range, and two-of-two at the line.  Schoenenberger's six three-point field goals made tied a single-game school record. She ties the record of Tammie Lukes (February 11, 1998 versus UW-Platteville), Nicole Palmer (February 14, 2007 versus UW-River Falls), Taylor Larson (January 13, 2010 versus UW-River Falls) and Melissa Lang (December 11, 2010 versus UW-Platteville). 

DeNoyer finished with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds Saturday night while Miller totaled 12 points and eight rebounds. 

Simpson (Iowa) shot 30.8% from the field, including 11.8% (four-of-34) from three-point range, and 93.3% (14-of-15) at the line.  Morrow led the Storm with 22 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks.  Megan Lankford, Britney Boland, Kali Rasmussen and Ellen Gallagher each scored six points.
