The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater rode strong shooting from the field and at the free-throw line Tuesday night to a 66-55 victory at Illinois Wesleyan in a non-conference affair in Bloomington, Ill.

The Warhawks (4-0 overall), who won their 16th straight regular season non-conference contest, shot 20-of-42 (47.6 percent) from the field and 23-of-28 (82.1 percent) from the free-throw line to offset a season-high 29 turnovers.

Junior forward Andrea Meinert and junior guard Malia Smith tallied 14 points apiece to lead UW-Whitewater. Smith, who hit 8-of-10 free throws, added six rebounds and three assists in the effort.

Junior guard Brooke Trewyn collected 10 points and five rebounds, and freshman center Kaelynn Lesniak posted nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and added six rebounds.

Neither team led by more than three points at any juncture in the first quarter, but the Warhawks tallied the final four points of the frame to take a 12-11 advantage.

The second quarter was just as tightly contested. After the Titans (1-2) took a 20-19 lead, UW-Whitewater registered five of the quarter's final seven points to take a 24-22 lead into the half.

The scoring picked up in the third as the Warhawks started the quarter on a 7-2 run, including a three-point play by Meinert, to take a 31-24 lead with 8:31 on the clock.

UW-Whitewater maintained its lead until the last four minutes of the quarter, when Illinois Wesleyan posted a 9-2 run to tie the contest at 44-44 heading into the fourth.

Senior guard Reilly Stewart started the final period with a 3-pointer, and freshman guard Becky Raeder capped a 14-2 run with a 3-pointer at the 5:40 mark to give the Warhawks a 58-46 advantage.

The Titans drew to within six with 3:13 remaining, but UW-Whitewater allowed only one basket the rest of the way and converted five free throws over the final 2:37 to seal the victory.

The Warhawks continue non-conference play this Saturday and Sunday at UW-La Crosse's Holiday Inn Express Classic. UW-Whitewater faces Ripon on Saturday at 7 p.m. before taking on Simpson (Iowa) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
