WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (2-2, 1-0 NJAC) outscored visiting Ramapo (3-1, 0-1 NJAC) 44-18 after intermission en route to a 70-45 victory Nov. 22 in both teams' New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener.
Trailing 27-26 at the break and 36-34 halfway through the third quarter, the Pioneers ended the period with a 15-5 burst behind five points apiece from junior forward Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River), carrying a 49-41 edge into the fourth.
Ahead 53-45 with 6:46 on the clock, senior guard Nikole Williams (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) scored eight points and freshman guard Kristina Ulrich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had six down the stretch as WP opened its largest margin of the night, 70-45, with 1:11 to play.
Harris led all players with 21 points, while Williams scored 13 tallies. Freshman guard/forward Alliera McCoy (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) collected a team-best 12 rebounds, and Woetzel added seven boards.
Junior guard Bridgette Buckalew led the Roadrunners with 16 points, and senior forward Bintou Berete finished with 13 rebounds.
WP shot 53.6 (15-28) percent from the field during the second half and .411 (23-56) overall while committing just 13 turnovers.
The Pioneers led by as many as five early (10-5, 4:43), but the two teams ended the first quarter deadlocked at 12-12. Freshman guard Samantha Rinaldi's three-pointer capped a 10-1 Roadrunner burst that made it a 24-17 Ramapo advantage midway through the second period, but WP notched nine of the game's next 10 tallies and trailed by just one, 27-26, at the break.
William Paterson will visit Vassar Monday, Nov. 28, at 6:00 p.m.
