More news about: Alverno

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College cut a 14-point fourth quarter deficit down to three but visiting Ripon College held on for the 68-62 win in game two of the 2016 Inferno Classic Friday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.

Three Inferno players reached double figures in the scoring column led by Mackenzie Mathies' 16-points -- which tied her career high and was good for game-high honors. The sophomore guard was 4-of-8 from the 3-point arc and sunk both of her free-throw attempts.

Gabby Hood added 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the young season and Nala Mudd posted her career best with 11 points.

Donna Zehner tied Hood with 11 rebounds to lead the hosts while Hood also led all with five assists.

Katelyn Bartlett's free throw with 2:13 left in the game capped off Alverno's 16-5 run that closed the gap to three. The Inferno (0-2) had a chance to tie on the next possession after a defensive stop but came up short and the Red Hawks (1-0) made all six of their final free throws to seal the contest.

Nicole Herkert led Ripon with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the visitors' season opener.

In the tournament's opening game, No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh topped Iowa Wesleyan University, 69-23.

Ripon will take on Iowa Wesleyan in Saturday's 1 p.m. game while the Inferno will host the Titans at 3 p.m.
