Twenty-seven points allowed in the first quarter, but just 20 combined allowed over the next three.

The Hope College women's basketball team sprung a matchup zone defense after a slow start that that paved the way for a 93-47 win over Finlandia on Friday in the opening round of the Tip-Off Tournament at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The nationally ranked Flying Dutch will play for the tournament championship on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. against Franklin, Indiana, a 74-47 winner over Carroll, Wisconsin in Friday's first game.

Hope (2-0 overall) switched away from a man-to-man defense after giving up six 3-pointers and 10 field goals in all on 50 percent shooting during the first quarter. Finlandia (0-1) made only seven more basketball on 17.1 shooting the remainder of the game.

The Flying Dutch went from trailing 27-18 after the opening quarter to leading 48-32 at halftime and 71-36 after three quarters.

Senior co-captain Angelique Gaddy said her team has many options for in-game changes like the defensive one that worked exceptionally well against Finlandia (0-1).

"If something's not working, we have different things in our pocket we can pull out and use it just as effectively," Gaddy said. "We practice a lot of defenses and if the issue is offense, we have a lot of different offenses that we can use as well. Our man defense wasn't as well as our zone today so we subbed with zone, and I think that was a key factor — not only just implementing it, but implementing it very well."

Sophomore center Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) led Hope in scoring for the second consecutive game with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Tyra Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) chipped in 11 points.
