ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick outscored visiting Rutgers-Newark (1-1) 22-15 in the final quarter to overtake the Scarlet Knights in a 62-58 victory Saturday night in the Holiday Inn Classic at Lambros Arena. Seniors Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) and Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) combined to score 28 points in the victory, which is the Hawks' second in a row.
The game was tight throughout with 14 lead changes and nine tie scores. Neither team led by more than two points over nearly all of the final five minutes of action until a Stone free throw put the Hawks up three with 19 ticks left. She would seal the win with another shot from the stripe with nine second remaining.
Stone would finish the night with a game-high 15 points, including a 9-of-11 showing from the free-throw line. She added six boards and three assists. Foreman contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) and Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) each added eight points for the victors. Corbett also hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Four points was the largest margin for either team in the first quarter. A Stone jumper would give Hartwick a 9-5 advantage with 4:56 left in the quarter, but a 10-4 Scarlet Knights' run closed the period with the visitors up 15-13.
The Hawks had three-point leads after Corbett baskets at 4:26 and 3:52, respectively. Rutgers-Newark tied the game at 27-all on a three with 1:27 left before a LeeAnne Green (Windsor, CT/Watkinson School) free throw with under a minute remaining gave the Hawks a one-point, 28-27, lead at the break.
Two baskets in the opening 40 seconds of the third quarter would give Rutgers-Newark a 32-28 edge and the Scarlet Knights would hold onto the lead for all but 38 seconds the rest of the quarter. They earned their biggest lead of the night, 43-37, on a layup before settling on a 43-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks trailed by four with 8:50 remaining in the contest, but a three-point play from Sarah Shaw (Franklin, MA/Franklin) and then a Johnson three-pointer put Hartwick up two, 51-49, a minute and a half later.
A Foreman bucket extended the lead to four. The lead would then change hands four times with two ties with under five minutes to go. After a Maria Simmons' layup gave the Scarlet Knights a one-point, 58-57 lead with 2:15 showing on the clock, a driving Green layup with 1:20 left put the Hawks up to stay.
The visitors had three straight chances to take the lead but could not convert, taking the game under the 30-second mark. Stone drained a pair from the line with 19 seconds left for a 61-58 Hartwick lead and the Hawks got another stop on the defensive end to regain possession. After another foul, Stone sank her ninth free throw to put the game away.
The Hawks would shoot 36.7% (18-for-49) for the game, holding the visitors to 32.8% (22-for-67) shooting. 'Wick out-rebounded Rutgers-Newark 47-36 on the evening.
Erin Langworthy (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) contributed six points and three rebounds off the bench for the Hawks. Green finished with four points and five boards, and Shaw ended up with four points and eight rebounds.
Simmons and Faith Ashby each had 13 points for Rutgers-Newark. Simmons added six rebounds, six assists, and five steals.
In the night's second game, Cara Adams poured in a game-high 18 points, which included four three-point field goals, to lead SUNY Oneonta to a 74-61 victory over Clarkson. Samantha Lisikatos added 14 points and seven assists, and Sara DiPasquale registered 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Hawks take on Clarkson on day two of the Holiday Inn Classic tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. SUNY Oneonta plays Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.
