ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team advanced to the fourth annual Pablo Coto Tip-Off Championship after cruising past Ursinus College on Friday night. Senior Kiki Laux led the Saints to a 46-32 victory over the Bears after registering a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds.
Laux knocked down two-straight free throws to put the Saints on the scoreboard first. Both squads battled back and forth throughout the first quarter until the Saints headed to the bench leading 12-9 at the end of the quarter.
MU's offense came alive in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears, 15-10. Sophomore Abby Fisher hit one from beyond the arc, followed by a layup by junior Nicole Viscuso for the Saints to close out the half ahead, 29-22.
A defensive stalemate took place at the start of the third quarter with neither team finding the bucket until two minutes in. The Saints answered the Bears by piecing together a 6-1 run led by Viscuso who added four. Sophomore Tyffani McQueen knocked down two free throws with 24 seconds left in the quarter to extend the blue and white's lead to 12, 41-29.
The fourth quarter began in a similar fashion before Laux fed McQueen for a layup with less than eight minutes of regulation left. The defensive intensity picked up on both ends of the court to keep the game at 45-29 for several minutes. The Saints went on to win 46-32 over the Bears.
For the game, Marymount shot 30.8 percent and knocked down 13 free throws, while outrebounding the Bears, 44-34.
The women now advance to the title game on Saturday, November 19, taking on Washington and Lee University, who defeated Colorado College in the other first round game Friday night. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
