ARLINGTON, Va. – An all-around team effort pushed the Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team past Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday night, 69-55, to start the season out in the win column.
Nine out of the 10 Saints that saw time all registered points in route to Marymount's third-straight season with a win to open the year. Leading the way for the Saints was D3hoops.com Preseason All-American junior Nicole Viscuso with a game-high 17 points, a game-high seven assists, and a game-high eight rebounds. Also seeing double figures in the home opener was junior Leah Hurstand senior Kiki Laux with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The only lead the Yellow Jackets saw in the contest was in the first three minutes, cashing in on the first basket of the game and then later after a Laux layup to take a 4-2 advantage. The Saints took over from there, putting up an 11-0 run that was capped off with a dish from the top of the key by Viscuso to sophomore Abby Fisher who made the back-door cut for the and-one finish.
By the half, Marymount worked to a 10-point lead, 36-26, off 50-percent shooting from the floor. The Saint defense held the Yellow Jackets to 37.5 percent from the floor and forced 15 turnovers including three steals each by Hurst and sophomore Tyffani McQueen.
The second half was very similar for the Saints, outscoring Randolph-Macon, 33-29, behind an 11-point effort by Viscuso.
For the game, Marymount shot 49.1 percent, including 50 percent from behind the arc.
The women will continue at home this weekend, as they host the fourth annual Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament in the Verizon Sports Arena. The Saints will take on Ursinus College in the opening game on Friday, November 18 at 5 p.m.
