CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Hood College's Allie Appleby scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half as the Blazers held off Washington (Md.) 62-56 in the season opener for both squads.

How it Happened
- Four different players scored as Hood opened the game with a 13-0 run over the opening six minutes. The Shorewomen regrouped, however, and closed the lead to 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
- Washington kept its run going into the second quarter and tied the game at 16-16 on a Cassidy Quattro lay up with 7:19 left in the half.
- McGaughey answered with a 3-pointer on Hood's next possession, only to again see the Shorewomen tie things up a 19-19 with 6:00 on the clock.
- Back-to-back buckets by Celina Herndon and Appleby put the Blazers back in front and Hood led 33-25 at the half.
- In the third quarter, a McGaughey free throw made it 39-25 with 7:44 remaining and the Blazers carried a nine-point lead, 45-34, into the fourth quarter.
- Washington surged and pulled within one, 54-53, after a Jordan Weir basket with 56 seconds left in the game. Herndon sank two free throws for a three point edge and the Shorewomen could not get closer than two down the stretch thanks to a 6-of-6 mark at the line down for Hood in the last 50 seconds.
Notes
- Two players had double-doubles for Washington. Quattro had 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Emily Thiemann netted 11 points and 10 boards. Weir added 12 points.
- Hood committed just 16 turnovers in the contest, while the Shorewomen tallied 17.
- The Blazers are 1-0 on the year, while Washington dropped to 0-1.
