LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Nov. 15, 2016) – Behind a great shooting performance beyond the three-point line, host Covenant opened the 2016-17 season with a 68-58 win over the Sewanee women's basketball team, Tuesday, inside the Barnes PE Center.
The Lady Scots made 43.8 percent of their three-point attempts. Along with their seven threes, Covenant outrebounded Sewanee 49-24. That helped Covenant to a 25-12 advantage in second-chance points.
Early on, Sewanee jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a Hannah McCormack layup and three by Bella Taylor. Covenant answered back with a 12-4 run over the next six minutes. Eventually, the Lady Scots led by three, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter.
Covenant opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run. That allowed the Lady Scots to build their advantage to 13, 24-11, with 5:22 left in the first half. From there, Sewanee rallied. A jumper from Taylor sparked an 11-0 run by the purple and gold. During that stretch, Taylor scored eight points.
A three by Emma Grimes and a layup by Aleksandreja Kulits gave Covenant a four-point lead, 29-25, at the half.
In the third quarter, Sewanee pulled to within one with 7:09 left before Covenant built a nine-point lead heading into the final quarter.
After a three by Kaley Hallmark pushed the Covenant lead to 49-37, Sewanee answered with a three by Corey Caulder. Unfortunately, the Lady Scots responded by scoring 11 of the next 15 points. With that, Covenant built its largest lead with 6:04 to play.
Sewanee pulled to within six, 62-56, after a pair of Taylor free throws with 1:20 left. However, Covenant held off the Tigers down the stretch.
As a team, Sewanee shot the ball well. The Tigers made 40 percent of their attempts. Individually, Taylor led all players with 24 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
McCormack added 14 points and four boards while Caulder pitched in 10 points.
Grimes paced Covenant with 17 points and five rebounds.
Sewanee continues its seven-game road trip to start the season with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Emory & Henry on Friday.
