BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 26, 2016) – Despite a strong offensive performance, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell just short in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament Quarterfinals, Friday, as No. 2 seeded Millsaps outlasted the Tigers 59-53 inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Tigers' season ends at 12-14. Millsaps advanced to Saturday's semifinal game where the Majors will take on No. 6 Centre who upset No. 3 Hendrix, 56-54.

Overall, the game was close throughout with 10 lead changes and three ties.

Sewanee took an early 8-6 lead as senior Jamie Chauvin hit a three with 6:24 left in the first quarter. After a three by junior Savannah Rose, Millsaps closed the quarter on a 15-9 run.

The Majors continued to shoot the ball well to start the second quarter. Millsaps built a 10-point lead, 30-20, after scoring nine of the first 12 points.

A layup by senior Haley McDonough stopped the Major run with 29 seconds left before halftime.

With Millsaps ahead 30-22 to start the second half, Sewanee chipped away from a 13-point deficit in the third. After a free throw by McDonough with 4:43 left, back-to-back jumpers by freshmen Bella Taylor and Corey Caulder cut the Millsaps lead to seven.

The Tigers finished the third quarter with a three by freshman Sue Kim that cut the Major lead to six, 43-37, with two seconds remaining.

After jumpers by McDonough and Chauvin, Sewanee was down two with 8:35 to play. Chauvin then tied the score at 43-43 with another layup a minute later.

The Tigers took a two-point lead, 50-48, when Chauvin hit another layup with 3:41 left. With score 53-53 with under a minute to play, a layup by Kala-Jewel Freeman gave the lead back to Millsaps.

After a Taylor turnover, Freeman made another layup with 20 seconds left. The Majors sealed the win when Braxton Thomas stole the ball from Chauvin and Beverly Holmes made another layup.

Overall, Sewanee made 42 percent of its shots. That included an incredible 52.6 percent of their shots from beyond the three-point arc.

Millsaps dominated inside with 38 points in the paint and 36 total rebounds.

Individually, Chauvin led Sewanee with 20 points. Rose added 11 points while Caulder finished with five points and seven rebounds.

Friday marked the final game for senior Chauvin and McDonough.
