The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team tied a program-record with its 15th straight victory as the Chargers ended the regular season with a 91-65 win over Penn College on Monday night at Horst Athletic Center. Lancaster Bible ends the regular season with a record of 22-3 and a 19-1 mark in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Chargers will host the NEAC Final Four this weekend and their opponent in Saturday's NEAC Semifinal will be determined Tuesday night.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible opened the game on a 5-0 run, but Penn College responded quickly and scored five straight points to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:57 remaining in the opening quarter. A 17-4 run over the next 5:48 gave Lancaster Bible a 22-9 lead with 2:09 to play in the opening quarter as seniors Katy Stover and Shanice Smith combined for 10 of the run's 17 points.
The Chargers led 28-16 after one quarter of play and took a 20-point lead, 37-17, thanks to a 9-1 run over the first 3:25 of the second quarter. Penn College would not go away however and cut its deficit to nine, 39-30, with 2:30 remaining in the second. Lancaster Bible eventually took a 44-32 lead into halftime, but once again in the third quarter, the Wildcats hung tough and it was an 11-point game, 50-39, just two minutes into the second half.
Lancaster Bible turned up its defense in the second half of the third quarter however and limited Penn College to just five points over the final 6:47 of the third. The Chargers' offense woke up in the meantime and Lancaster Bible led 69-46 after 30 minutes of play.
With 5:02 to play, Penn College cut its deficit to 13 points at 75-62, but the Wildcats scored just three more points and Lancaster Bible ended the game on a 16-3 run to win, 91-65.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 33-of-67 (49.3 percent) from the floor and was 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free throw line...Smith finished with a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds...JuniorKirsten Webster was terrific on both ends of the floor as she had a career-high 25 points and career-high 10 rebounds to go with three assists and three steals...Stover was the final player to score 20+ points as she added 22 points and six assists...Junior Krissy Pennell was the third player with a double-double as she had 11 points and 10 assists...Marisa Jo Abts had five points, four rebounds and two assists...Danielle Mowery and Alicia Ross each had 18 points for the Wildcats who finished the season with a record of 3-19, 3-17 NEAC.
The Coach Says: "Tonight didn't mean anything for the standings, but it was important for our confidence, especially for our shooters, who had a good night," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "Hopefully this game can get us into a groove heading into the weekend. Kirsten Webster led us tonight and she brought great energy all night."
On taking it one game at a time this weekend..."We have a senior class that knows it is a one game at a time thing right now," Vanderhoff said. "They aren't happy with the way things ended last season in the NEAC Semifinals and we will have some intense practices this season and do everything we can to get better the rest of the week before Saturday."
