GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team advanced to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship game after a 70-59 victory over Stockton University on Tuesday night.
The Profs have a record of 22-4. This is the first time since the 1999-00 season that Rowan has accumulated 22 wins. It's also the most wins in a season for head coach Gabby Lisella. The Ospreys have a 21-6 mark. Rowan travels to top seed Montclair State University for the title game on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The Red Hawks defeated fifth seeded William Paterson University, 70-62 in the other semifinal game.
Guard Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) poured in a career high 18 points. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) collected a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) chipped in with 10 points. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and guard Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) tallied nine and eight points respectively.
For Stockton, forward Najha Treadwell (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 17 points. Forward Sasha Williams (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had 12 rebounds, 11 points and seven blocks. Guards Taylor Christina (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Shaqui Coppage (jr. Salem, NJ/Salem) chipped in with nine points apiece.
Stockton went out to a 6-2 lead with 7:47 to play in the first quarter. Rowan then used a 12-2 run to take a 14-8 advantage at the 2:22 mark. Matthews scored four points, guard/forward Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Garofalo each had three and Schullstrom, two. The Ospreys cut the deficit to one (14-13) with 0:46 on the clock, but Lake made a layup (0:31) and Schullstrom hit a jumper (0:21) for an 18-13 score after one.
In the second, Rowan led 24-18 (6:33). Stockton collected the next six points to tie the game at 24 with 3:56 remaining. Crilley netted five consecutive points on a triple (1:48) and a jumper (1:26), making the score 29-24. A Williams' layup (0:51) and jumper (0:15) trimmed the lead to one (29-28). Crilley nailed a jump shot at the three-second mark and Rowan went into the break with a 31-28 advantage.
Christina's triple (8:27) got Stockton back to within two (33-31) in the third quarter. A 7-2 spurt by the Profs extended the cushion to seven points (40-33) at 4:21. The score was 42-39 (1:40) then Rowan tallied the final seven points of the stanza on a jumper (1:24) and a three-pointer (0:59) by guard Olivia Rulon (fr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) and a Matthews' layup (0:12), making it 59-49 heading to the fourth.
In the final period, Stockton got to within eight (55-47) on a layup by Treadwell. The Profs collected the next nine points, including five by Crilley and two each from Sanchez and Lake to take their largest lead 64-47 at the 4:15 mark. The Ospreys could only get as close as 11, which was the final margin.
