Cortland Women Used Balanced Scoring to Beat Brockport, 74-67

CORTLAND, N.Y. - All five Cortland starters scored in double figures as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Brockport, 74-67, in SUNYAC women's basketball action. Cortland (16-8, 11-6 SUNYAC) avenged a 35-point loss to the Golden Eagles from two weeks ago and now sits a half game behind fourth-place Fredonia (11-5) in the league standings. Cortland will close out the regular season at home versus Oswego Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) led Cortland with 14 points. She made four of her eight 3-point attempts. Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and Taylor Miller (Freeport) each scored 12 points and Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) and Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) scored 10 points apiece. Levine also led the Red Dragons with a career-high 13 rebounds, 10 on the defensive glass.

Levine and Cohen shared the team lead with three assists each and Miller totaled a team-best three steals in addition to grabbing five rebounds.

Olivia Suhr led Brockport (12-11, 8-8) with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks and added four assists. She hit 10-of-14 field goals. Hannah Spencer registered 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and Erin Cunningham finsihed with seven points, 10 rebounds and team bests of five assists and three steals.

Brockport jumped out to a 17-6 lead less than seven minutes into the game, but Cortland fought back and eventually led at the end of the first quarter, 18-17, on a Levine jumper with two seconds left. The Red Dragons then finished the final 3:03 of the second quarter on a 12-4 run, fueled by six points each from Chapko and Miller, and led 43-36 at intermission.

Cortland's lead grew to 10 at 52-42 on a Crosby layup with 4:43 left in the third. Brockport closed within three later in the quarter and trailed by six entering the fourth. Down 66-60 with 5:12 left in the game, the Golden Eagles scored seven straight points on a Faith Welch 3-pointer and baskets by Schyler Laux and Suhr to take a 67-66 lead with 3:19 left.

Cohen responded with a layup with 2:51 left after a Miller steal to give Cortland the lead, and Miller notched another steal that led to her own layup with 2:30 left to put the Red Dragons up 70-67. Neither team was able to score again for more than two minutes, and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) sewed up the win for Cortland with four free throws - two at the 22-second mark and two more with 10 seconds remaining.

Cortland finished 20-of-23 from the foul line compared to just 2-of-4 free throw shooting for Brockport. The Red Dragons committed only five fouls in the game, all in the third quarter. Cortland finished at 43 percent overall from the floor and 42 percent (8-of-19) from the arc. Brockport was 44 percent overall and 28 percent (9-of-32) from long distance.
