Lehman College falls to Staten Island on Senior Night

BRONX, NY --- The Lehman College women's basketball team concluded their regular season on Tuesday night at the APEX Gymnasium in the Bronx, losing to the visiting College of Staten Island, 64-57.

The Lightning of Lehman (18-7/13-3 CUNYAC) were led by Karrin Walker, who finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Amely Del Rosario posted a team-high 14 points with six assists and six rebounds, while Yarmese Jones contributed 12 points while pulling down seven boards. Jennifer Navarro scored ten while Amani Lightbourne added ten rebounds.

Staten Island (17-3/13-3 CUNYAC) was led by Christina Pasaturo with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Samantha Flecker contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Lehman spotted Staten Island a 10-2 lead to start the game, but responded with a 14-4 run to take their first lead at 16-14 off a layup from Walker with 7:18 to go in the second period. But the Dolphins answered with a 17 point unanswered run to take a commanding lead. Down 33-19 at halftime, the Lightning used shutdown defense in the third period to get back into it, going into the final frame on a 12-2 run and down just two points, a stretch capped off with two free throws from Navarro. Lehman took their first lead of the second half with 4:51 remaining in the game off a Lightbourne layup, but Staten Closed out with ten unanswered points on their way to a 12-3 run to finish the game.

The loss snaps Lehman's nine game winning streak. It was their first defeat since January 13th, and their first home loss since December 30th.

Prior to the game, Lehman College honored their senior class as part of Senior night. Navarro, Lightbourne, Walker and Jones have all provided incredible leadership and dedication to the Lehman College community both on and off the court. Coaches, teammates, family members and fans recognized the senior quartet for their all contributions. They will forever be part of the Lehman Athletics family.

By virtue of earning the number one overall seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament, Lehman receives a bye into the semifinals. They'll await word of their opponent for their semifinal game on Wednesday, February 24th at the City College of New York. Scheduled tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
