Rowan Women's Basketball Notches 20th Win With An 82-68 Victory Over Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team won its 20th game of the season, 82-68 at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday night.
 
The Profs are 20-4 overall and 14-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). This is the first time since the 2003-04 campaign that Rowan has won 20 games. The Profs remain in a three-way tie for first place in the NJAC with Montclair State University and Stockton University with one game remaining. The Scarlet Raiders are 7-17 with a 3-14 conference mark.
 
Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) poured in a career-high 31 points, including the 1,000th of her career. She is the 16th player in program history and the second this season to eclipse 1,000 points. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) reached the feat earlier in the season. It's the first time since the 2004-05 campaign that two players reaching 1,000 points in the same year.
 
Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) and guard/forward Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each tallied 12 points. Guard Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Matthews scored 10 points apiece. Matthews also grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
For Rutgers-Newark, guard Arianna Williams (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored 24 points and had nine rebounds. Guard Maria Simmons (jr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) contributed with 18 points, 10 assists and nine boards. Forward Nikki Sammartino (so. North Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) added 13 points.
 
Rowan started the game on an 11-3 run (5:01) that included five points from Schullstrom and two each by Sanchez, Garofalo and Lake. The Profs were in front 18-11 after a Matthews jumper with 2:52 on the clock. Rutgers-Newark scored seven on the final 10 points of the stanza and the score was 21-18 after one. Williams netted six points.
 
The score was tied at 21 (8:46) and 27 (7:25) in the second. Sanchez put Rowan up by five (34-29) at he 5:11 mark. The Scarlet Raiders tallied the next six points to take their first lead 35-34 with 2:50 on the clock. The Profs scored the next four on a layup by Sanchez (2:33) and a triple Schullstrom (1:12) for a 39-35 advantage. Rutgers-Newark tied the game at 39 (0:46) then guard/forward Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) completed a three-point play with 28-second remaining and the Profs took a 42-39 lead into the dressing room.
 
Rowan expanded its cushion in eight (49-41) on a three-pointer by Lake at the 8:02 mark of the third. Williams made the score 49-44 with a triple (7:33) then the Profs collected six straight to go up by 11 (55-44) with 6:27 on the clock. The Scarlet Raiders got back to within four (3:11) on a Williams free throw. The Profs ended the period with a 7-2 spurt, making it 64-55 heading to the fourth.
 
The Profs started the fourth with a 13-4 run that included points from six different players and gave them a 77-59 lead (5:54). Rutgers-Newark got to as close as 13 (81-68) at the 1:30 mark and Rowan came away with a 14-point victory.
 
Rowan concludes the regular season against William Paterson University on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m.
