Hamilton women net NESCAC win against Trinity

Hamilton College's Sam Graber '16 poured in 21 points and the Continentals pulled out a 72-64 NESCAC win against the Trinity College Bantams at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.

The Continentals (8-15, 2-7 NESCAC) exploded for 23 points in the fourth quarter and could have scored more but they went 7-for-19 at the free-throw line in the final 10 minutes. Trinity (10-11, 0-9) led 51-49 after three quarters but lost for the 10th time in its last 11 games.

Graber is in third place on the program's all-time list with 1,363 points and is tied for fifth with 693 rebounds. She is second in the conference in scoring with 17.0 points per game and is third with 47 steals after she had four against the Bantams. Graber has scored 20 or more points in a game nine times this season.

Hamilton's Kendall Rallins '19 was one assist and one rebound short of a triple-double. Rallins finished with 11 points, nine assists and a season-high nine rebounds off the bench. She is fourth in the NESCAC with 3.7 assists per game.

Carly Gruenberg '16 and Lauren Getman '18 chipped in 14 points apiece for the Continentals. Hamilton won for the third time in nine all-time meetings with Trinity.

Mackenzie Griffin paced the Bantams with 23 points, 13 boards and three steals. Griffin leads the conference with 18.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Sheena Landy added nine points and Alexa Menard handed out four assists. Trinity committed 22 turnovers.

In a game where there were 10 ties and six lead changes, Hamilton took the lead for good with a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Graber started the spurt with a layup and Gruenberg added two baskets for a 55-51 advantage.

Griffin made a pair of free throws but Getman restored the Continentals' four-point lead with a jumper. Griffin countered with a bucket but two free throws by Graber and a Rallins layup gave Hamilton a 61-55 cushion.

Griffin sandwiched two baskets around a Getman jumper and it was 63-59. Graber scored the next three points and provided the Continentals with a seven-point lead. Courtney Erickson cut Hamilton's advantage to 66-61 with a layup but the Continentals grabbed their biggest lead of the night at 70-61 on a Getman bucket followed by one free throw apiece by Caroline Barrett '17 and Rallins.

Neither team led by more than six points during the first three quarters. The Bantams went on a 12-5 run in the first quarter and took their largest lead of the night. Trailing 6-5, Griffin nailed a jumper and Christina Raiti canned a 3-pointer for a 10-6 Trinity edge. Getman scored in the paint and Raiti responded with another basket from beyond the arc. Hamilton's Halie Serbent '19 answered with a 3-pointer but Griffin and Landy scored from close range, and the Bantams owned a 17-11 lead. The Continentals roared back to tie the score with six straight points but Landy beat the buzzer with a jumper and Trinity led 19-17 after one.

Hamilton still trailed 25-23 midway through the second quarter when the Continentals went on an 8-0 run. Gruenberg scored the first four points and Graber scored the last four for a 31-25 cushion with 3:26 left before the break. Trinity ended the quarter with a 9-0 spurt and took a 34-31 edge into the locker room. Griffin started the run with a jumper and ended it with two free throws.

Hamilton hosts Amherst College in the Continentals' season finale on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. Amherst is ranked sixth in the top 25 coaches poll and seventh in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
