The Westminster women's basketball winning streak extends into double digits with Saturday's 63-43 win over Eureka College. The Westminster Blue Jays have won 10 straight games and now possess a 16-4 overall record and a 12-2 conference record.
The Blue Jays took an 11-2 lead over the Eureka Red Devils after the first quarter. Eureka scored their only two points off free throws three minutes in.
The Blue Jays extended their run into the second quarter to take a 13-point lead with 8:57 left in the first half. The Red Devils scored for the first time in 8:11 off a free throw and continued to knock the Blue Jay lead to just seven points with 7:20 to play in the first. Junior Andrea Zalis hit a jump shot, followed by a three-pointer by junior Payton Gruber to put the Blue Jays back up by 12, but the Red Devils hit a 6-0 run over a three-minute span to bring them within six. Gruber hit another three with 0:02 on the clock to send the Blue Jays into halftime with a 25-16 lead.
The Red Devils made a three to begin the second half, but the Blue Jays went on a 15-3 run to take an 18-point advnatage, 40-22. Two free throws by Zalis gave the Blue Jays a 19-point lead, but Eureka made two to end the quarter with a 45-28 score.
The Red Devils managed to bring the game within nine, but a three-point play by junior Krista Armontrout gave the Blue Jays a 14-point lead, 52-38. Eureka was fouled on a three-pointer, allowing them within 11 with 4:25 to play. The Blue Jays ended the game with a 9-0 run, winning 63-43.
Zalis led the floor with 15 points and pulled down eight boards. Armontrout shot 60 percent from the field to add 14 points.
The Blue Jays travel to Carlinville, Illinois on Wednesday, February 10, for their 15th conference game of the season. Tip-off between the Blue Jays and Blackburn is at 6:00 pm.
