PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville College women's basketball team defeated FDU-Florham Wednesday evening, 66-59, in a key MAC Freedom contest at Kennedy Gym. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Devils that dated back five years.
Manhattanville's last win against the Devils came nearly five years ago to the date, when the Valiants beat FDU 76-39 on February 9, 2011. But the win moves Manhattanville (15-6, 7-4 MAC Freedom) one game closer to FDU-Florham (16-6, 8-3 MAC Freedom) in the conference standings, as the Valiants remain tied for third in the conference with three MAC Freedom games left.
The Valiants had four players reach double-figures in the win, with seniors Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) and Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington), along with sophomore Candice Scott-Mason(Trenton, N.J./Ewing) led the way with 12 points each, and junior Sarah Kelley (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) added ten points off the bench to pace the Manhattanville attack.
Manhattanville and FDU traded baskets for much of the first half, with the Devils taking a six-point lead, their largest of the game at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter. Manhattanville would battle back and end the quarter leading 16-15.
After maintaining their lead in the second quarter, the Devils went on a seven-point run to retake the lead and go up by three. Shalette Brown led the charge for FDU, scoring five of her game-high 20 points during the stretch. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Danielle Leguillou gave the Devils a 32-28 lead at the halftime break.
Manhattanville opened the second-half on an 11-5 run, taking the lead back from the Devils for the final time in the contest. The Valiants began the second half five of seven shooting from the field, led by four points from sophomore forward Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts). The momentum would carry over into the final quarter, when Manhattanville built their lead up to nine points with a three-pointer from Raaf and a layup from Pabon to begin the final quarter.
After FDU cut the deficit to five points, Raaf made a running layup to push the lead back to seven points. FreshmanKayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) added a layup of her own before Raaf hit another shot in the lane to give the Valiants a 61-52 lead with 3:55 to play.
The Devils would chip away scoring six unanswered points over the next two and a half minutes, but a layup from McGuire and a jumper from Scott-Mason would put the game out of reach for good.
The Valiants return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Eastern as they look for the season sweep against the Eagles after defeating Eastern 80-65 loss in the teams' first matchup this season.
