New Paltz Women's Basketball Takes Care of Oswego, 83-32

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven as the Hawks downed SUNY Oswego, 83-32, on Tuesday evening in the Hawk Center.
 
New Paltz recorded 41 bench points and edged Oswego, 43-35, in rebounds. The Hawks shot a 46.3 (31-of-67) field goal percentage and a 91.7 (11-of-12) free throw percentage, while the Lakers shot 22.2 percent (12-of-54) from the floor and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the line.
 
Several New Paltz players tallied double-digit points in the win. Junior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) led the team with 17 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the field, 2-of-2 shots from the 3-point range, and 5-of-5 shots from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Urusline School) added 14 points while senior guard Colleen Ames (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) chipped in 10 points. Sophomore guard/forward Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) tallied 13 points and a career-high 14 boards to post a double-double for the night.
 
Senior guard Taylor Sorell led the Lakers with nine points with junior guard Nicole SantaMaria chipping in eight points. Sophomore forward Zana Dillard tallied 10 rebounds in the loss.
 
The Hawks rise to 16-5, 11-3 and will host SUNY Geneseo in the Hawk Center on Friday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. The Lakers drop to 3-18, 1-13 and move on to play SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
 
The Lakers kept the score close at the start of the first quarter but the Hawks surged ahead on a 17-3 run for a commanding 24-9 gap heading into the second period. New Paltz carried its momentum all the way to the break, leading 46-19 as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
 
Despite the Lakers efforts to cut the score in the second half, they were unable to catch New Paltz as the Hawks extended their lead by more than 50 to take home the win.
