Trinity Women's Basketball Captures Hockenbury Classic Crown

Northfield, Vt. - Senior captain Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) had 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 65-61 win over the host Norwich University Cadets in the Ed Hockenbury Women's Basketball Classic Finals this afternoon.  Trinity wins its third tournament of the season and improves its overall record to 6-1, while the Cadets drop to 5-3.

Trinity led, 14-11, after the first quarter, as Raiti nailed a pair of early three-pointers for six of the points, but Norwich opened the second quarter with a long ball by Shyann Josler to tie it. Six straight Bantam points gave the visitors a 20-14 lead with six minutes left before halftime, bu the Cadets went on a 16-3 run over the rest of the second quarter to lead, 30-23, at the break.

Trinity answered in the third quarter with a 17-5 spurt, as Raiti gave Trinity back the lead at 34-33 on a jumper with 5:18 left in the period and added a layup at the 2:15 mark of the third to push the Bantam advantage to 40-35.  Norwich battled back again and took a 41-40 lead on a put-back by Heather Leblanc, and the teams fought their way to a 48-48 tie with 6:19 remaining in the game.  

Senior captain forward Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Vt.) gave Trinity the lead for good moments later with a pair of free throws, and a layup by first-year forward Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) pushed the Bantam lead to its largest margin of the day at 62-53 with 2:20 on the clock.  Norwich cut the its deficit to four points at 63-59 with 20 seconds left after back-to-back-baskets by Arianna Harrison, but Raiti drilled a pair of free throws late to secure the Bantam victory.

Raiti was named to the all-tournament team, joining fellow Trinity senior captain Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) who totaled 16 points and 12 boards today.  Erickson chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds off the bench, and senior captain guard Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) added five boards and three assists for the Bantams.  Josler had 18 points and LeBlanc scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds for the Cadets.
