Williamstown, Mass. - The Trinity College women's basketball team dropped their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener, 73-58, on Sunday afternoon at Williams. The loss moves the Bantams to 9-2 on the season, 0-1 in conference play, while the Ephs improve to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in NESCAC action. 

Williams got out to a 23-17 lead after the first quarter of play, capitalizing on eight Bantam turnovers. At the half, Trinity found themselves down 41-33 to the hosts as senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds.  

Sophomore Ammani Fernandez (Queens, N.Y.) stretched the Williams lead to 13 with a three pointer at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter, adding another two points on a transition layup seconds later, however Trinity closed the quarter on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 50 going into the final quarter of play. The Bantams took advantage of six Eph turnovers and a 4-13 shooting spell by Williams in the quarter to give themselves a chance to win it in the fourth quarter.

Fernandez and junior Devon Caveney (Andover, Mass.) combined for 19 points in the fourth, 11 points more than the Bantams scored as a team, propelling Williams to the 15-point win as the Bantams were not able to overcome 19 turnovers on the afternoon.

Griffin finished with 29 points and 16 rebounds, her ninth double-double of the season, while senior captain guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) finished in double figures with 10 points. Junior guard Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) played 26 minutes and contributed five points in her first game back from injury. For Williams, Hernandez finished with 24 points, Caveney with 19 points, and senior captian Katie Litman (Dallas, Texas) with 10 points and eight rebounds. Williams held the Bantams to just 36.8% shooting from the field (21-57) while connecting on over 50% of their own shots from the field. 

Trinity returns to action on Friday, January 15, when they travel to Connecticut College for an in-state conference tilt with the Camels.
