ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (9-12, 7-6 E8) took an 80-79 lead on a Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) layup with 1:32 left in the game, but visiting Nazareth hit a three-pointer on its next possession and hung on for an 82-81 victory on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena.
Both teams had a possession with under a minute left before the Hawks got the ball back with 12.3 seconds remaining. Corbett would get held with 3.1 ticks left and she went to the free-throw line for two shots. She drained her first and her second hit the back iron. Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) ripped down the offensive rebound but she couldn't get a good shot off in traffic and the Flyers escaped with the win.
Vonasek finished the game with a career-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She added a team-high 11 rebounds for the Hawks.
Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) shot 7-of-13 for 17 points. She added nine rebounds and tied for a team-high with five assists.
Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) made a trio of three-pointers and ended the night with 17 points. She also had five assists. Corbett contributed 10 points and three assists.
The Hawks would shoot a season-best 50.8% (30-for-59) in the game. They led by as many as eight points twice in the first half. With the score tied at 15-15, a layup from Jessica Bellai (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont), back-to-back three-pointers from Stone, and a Foreman bucket in a 10-2 run gave 'Wick a 25-17 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Nazareth (15-6, 8-4 E8) took a one-point, 26-25 lead with under eight minutes left in the half. A 9-0 'Wick run brought the edge back to seven. Later, a Foreman layup increased the scored to 40-32 before the Hawks took a 43-36 lead into halftime.
The Golden Flyers would out-score Hartwick 24-15 in the third quarter. They led by as many as seven with 2:10 left. The Hawks got the last five points of the quarter and trailed by two entering the fourth, 60-58.
The final five minutes of the game would feature five lead changes and one tie score. A Vonasek old-fashioned three-point play put 'Wick ahead, 70-69, with 5:06 left before Julia Brew put Naz back in front 25 seconds later. The Flyers maintained their lead until Corbett's basket made it 80-79. Brew answered just six seconds later to put the visitors up for good.
Sam Sorge would lead Nazareth with a game-high 24 points. She hit five three-pointers and added five rebounds. Brew finished with 20 points and four treys and Lindsay Kelly scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) would contribute seven points and four rebounds for Hartwick.
The Hawks next play a week from today on February 16 at Stevens Institute of Technology.
