UMHB women beat Concordia Texas 77-64

Austin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter to erase a double-digit first half lead as the Cru posted a 77-64 victory over Concordia Texas Saturday after in Austin. UMHB improves to 11-10 overall and 6-5 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru also clinches an ASC Tournament berth with the win. The loss drops the Tornados to 10-10 overall and 2-8 in ASC play on the year.

 

Concordia grabbed an eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched it out to 12 points late in the second before UMHB started to rally. The Cru cut it to 43-36 at halftime. The Tornados pushed the lead back to 12 points midway through the third, but UMHB closed the period with a 21-10 run to cut the gap to 63-62 at the end of the third. The Cru then held Concordia without a field goal in the fourth quarter and the Tornados' only point of the period came on Brenisha Payne's free-throw with 1:34 left to play. By then, UMHB had grabbed a seven-point lead and the Cru pulled away from there for the victory. UMHB outscored Concordia 15-1 in the fourth quarter.

 

Jonelle Smith led the Cru with 18 points and Kendra Wynn added 15 more. Tori Tucker pulled down a team-high six rebounds. UMHB shot 70 percent from the field in the second half and hit 51 percent overall in the game. The Cru was also 26-30 from the free-throw line to help overcome 21 turnovers.

 

Jaela Dejean topped CTX with 21 points and Isis Johnson and Mercedes Ellison added 14 points apiece. Johnson also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Outside of the three players in double figures, only four other players scored for Concordia. The Tornados shot just 23 percent from the field in the second half and went 0-10 from three-point range. Concordia shot 35 percent for the game as a team and narrowly out rebounded UMHB 37-36 in the game.

 

The Cru will continue their road swing with the final two road contests of the regular season next week. UMHB will take on Sul Ross State in a 5:30 PM start next Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Howard Payne next Saturday.
