St. John Fisher College Rallies Past Nazareth

 The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter and battled back for a 61-58 win over visiting Nazareth College on Saturday at Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court.

With the win, Fisher improves to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Nazareth falls to 14-6, 7-4.

Nazareth jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening moments, but Fisher scored the next seven, including five from McKenzie Bezon, to put her team up 7-6 midway through the first quarter.  The Golden Flyers would use an 8-0 run late in the quarter and led 14-10 after the opening period.

Nazareth would lead by as many as seven with 7:21 left at 19-12 following a three-point-play from Lindsey Kelly, but Fisher would chip away at the advantage.

The Cardinals would take their first lead of the quarter with three minutes left on Maria Kelleher's second 3-pointer of the half to put Fisher up 25-24, and Erin Hulbert hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired to give Fisher a 34-30 lead at the half.

Fisher would lead by as many as nine at 42-33 with 6:16 left in the third, but the Cardinals went cold after that.

Nazareth went on a 16-0 run over the remainder of the third quarter and scored on a jumper on the opening possession of the fourth to take a 51-42 lead 30 seconds into the final frame.

The Cardinals didn't give up.  Fisher responded with 14-3 run over the next six minutes and took a 56-54 lead on a jumper from Caroline Robertson with just over three minutes to go.
Nazareth scored the next four points to take a 58-56 lead with two minutes to go, but Fisher's Mary Kate Cusack put the Cardinals up for good at 59-58 on her lone 3-pointer with just over a minute to go.

On the ensuing possession, Bridget Carney blocked a Nazareth layup with just under 30 seconds left to give her team possession.  Hulbert made two free throws with 14.7 points for the game's final score and the Fisher defense didn't allow Nazareth to attempt a game-tying shot. 

Robertson led her team with 12 points, while Hulbert chimed in with 11.

Cusack finished with nine points, five steals and four assists, while Bezon added six points, six rebounds and three steals.

Carney led Fisher with eight rebounds, while Kelleher finished with eight points.  Alyssa Robens came off the bench and tallied six points.

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Utica College.
