Trinity Women's Basketball Beaten By Bates

Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore forward Nina Davenport (Freeport, Maine) totaled 22 points and 15 rebounds, drilling six of her 11 attempts from long range, to lead the visiting Bates College Bobcats to a 77-61 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon on Ogrodnik Court in Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity falls to 10-9 overall and 0-8 in the NESCAC, while Bates improves to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in the league with its first win against the Bantams since 2013.

Trinity made one more field goal than Bates, shooting 40.3 percent from the field (27-67), but the Bobcats made 10 treys and the Bantams were just 1-for-13 from beyond the arc.  Bates also went to the foul line 19 times, making 15, while Trinity was 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.  The Bobacts also finished with a 43-to-35 edge on the glass.  Senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) was the one of four Bantams in double figures in scoring, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while classmate Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) added 14 points, a team-high 10 boards, and a game-high four blocked shots.  First-year forward Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) came off the bench to score 13 points and grab four rebounds for Trinity, and junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) contributed 11 points, four rebounds, a game-high six assists, and four steals.  Bates senior tri-captain guard Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) matches Davenport with 22 points, while junior guard Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) added 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists, and junior forward Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) had 10 points and 12 boards.

Bates led, 16-12, after one quarter, as Davenport made back-to-back three-pointers in the final 2:05 after trinity took its second and final lead of the game, 12-10, on a jumper by Cunningham with 2:22 on the clock.  The Bobcats led by as many as 16 points, 38-22, in the second quarter but a 6-0 Bantam run made the score, 38-28, with 1:37 left before halftime before two free throws by Nason gave Bates a 40-28 advantage at intermission.

After a Davenport layup in the opening minute of the second half, Trinity outscored the Bobcats, 15-4, over the next 5:25, and trailed, 46-43, after a Mills jumper from the corner.  Davenport and Nason combined on the game's next eight points, before Mill scored the last four points of the third quarter to make the score, 54-47, in the visitors' favor with one quarter left.  A long three-pointer by Cunningham and a Mills layup pulled Trinity back within three points at 59-56 with 6:39 on the clock, but Bates closed the game with an 11-2 run, including seven by Nason.
