DOVER, Del. – The 24th ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team finished their three-game road trip this week with a 64-56 win at Wesley. The host Wolverines proved a challenging opponent to finish a stretch of four games in eight days stretching back to win against Penn State Harrisburg last Saturday in the Freeman Center. With the win, CNU improves to 19-2 overall with a 12-2 mark in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Sophomores Devon Byrd and Sam Porter sparked the Captains in the first quarter as CNU built an early 17-8 lead with nearly five minutes remaining in the quarter. Byrd contributed eight of her 12 points alongside Porter's six points in the opening ten minutes.

The next five minutes were indicative of how the game would progress. Brionna Johnson, Wesley's stellar junior slid past her defender to connect on a layup at the 3:55 mark to spark a 9-2 run to close out the first quarter and trail only 19-17 at the first quarter break. Johnson finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Wesley began the second quarter continuing their pressure on the Captains. Baskets by Tiara White and Brittney Kerns sandwiched a pair of Tiyanna Gibbs free-throws as Wesley built a 23-19 advantage. Jalynn Ponzo finally got the Captains on the scoreboard in the second with a pair of free throws but it was Makenzie Fancher's three-pointer almost four minutes into the quarter which put the Captains ahead, 24-23.  The Captains extended their lead with eight more points to conclude a 13-0 run on a Brooke Basinger three-pointer.

Despite the run, Wesley would not go away. Trailing only 34-29 at the half, Wesley faltered in the third quarter as Sam Porter took control of the game. Porter connected on four of five at the line while adding a pair of buckets to extend the Captains lead to 52-38 at the end of the third.

The Captains' road weariness showed in the fourth. Wesley outscored CNU 18-13 in the final quarter and trimmed the Captains lead to 7 twice before time finally expired on the Wolverines.

CNU returns to the Freeman Center on Wednesday for a 5:30 start against Mary Washington, the team currently tied with CNU in the CAC with only two losses and an identical 12-2 league record. The Captains defeated the Eagles 58-48 last month in Fredericksburg. Both teams trail Marymount who is 13-1 in CAC play after defeating York earlier today.

Wednesday's game will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/LIVE with live stats available, as well.
