BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit to beat the University of Texas at Dallas Comets 60-55 Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 10-10 on the season and 5-5 in American Southwest Conference action while the Comets moved to 12-8 on the season and 5-6 in league play.
U.T.-Dallas jumped to an early lead with an 8-2 run to open the contest. UMHB cut the lead to three in the second quarter but ended the half at a 31-22 deficit. The Comets opened the third quarter strong, leading by as many as 10 points before UMHB used a 12-0 run to grab a 45-41 lead on U.T.-Dallas. The Cru held that lead for just under three minutes of the fourth quarter when the Comets tied the contest at 47 and then again at 48-48. Kourtney Bevers hit a three-pointer to put the Cru ahead 51-48 and scored five points in the final 19 seconds of play to secure the 60-55 win for UMHB.
Bevers led the Cru with 16 points followed by Kendra Wynn with 12 and Mackenzie Coffey with 11. Coffey also recorded a double-double, leading the Cru with 11 rebounds. Meghan Turner assisted a team-high five buckets while Jonelle Smith and Wynn recorded four steals each. UMHB out-rebounded the Comets 41-36 in the contest, forcing U.T.-Dallas into 29 turnovers.
Jasmine Lopez led U.T.-Dallas with 14 points followed by Micaela Gonzalez with 13. The Comets shot 40 percent in the contest, 38.9 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line. Bevers led the Cru in shooting, going 12-for-14 in the game as UMHB shot 33.8 percent. UMHB had a 71.4 percent performance from the line and shot 30 percent from the three-point line.
The Cru continues play on Saturday, February 6th in a 1 p.m. match at Concordia University Texas in Austin. UMHB then takes a two-game road trip before returning home to host the annual Pink Zone game on Thursday, February 18th in a 5:30 p.m. match against McMurry University.
