WildCats Can't Keep Momentum after Big First

LEXINGTON, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team outscored Washington and Lee University 20-11 in the first period, but the Generals ended up winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup 61-50 on Wednesday night.

The early stages of the game went back and forth, as Korin Harris started the game off with a quick bucket.  W&L came back and had a 4-2 lead soon after, but the WildCats went on a run right after as Jacqueline Hockman started it off with a layup at 7:32.  The 'Cats then tallied eight of the next 10.  Harris scored four, while Rebecca Harvey and Daijah Johnson had the other two.

The teams traded baskets before Alexis Calloway and Hockman ended the period with two baskets, to give Randolph the 20-11 lead at the end of the first.

Taylor Samuels hit a layup shortly after the start of the second to push the advantage to double-figures.  However the rest of the period belonged to the Generals.  Washington and Lee scored 10 of the next 12, with Harvey the lone 'Cat tallying.  Harris gave Randolph the lead back with a pair from the line.  W&L tied it once more, before Harvey made one charity shot.  A three by Paige Corvino gave the Generals a two-point lead, which would go to one before the half.

W&L carried the momentum over to the third period.  The Generals extended their advantage to seven with 5:40 remaining, before Hope Randolph converted a traditional three-point play.  But Washington and Lee once again responded with five straight to push it to nine.  However, the WildCats fought back over the remaining minutes.

Harris and Calloway cut it to six, before another three by the Generals.  Both teams exchanged points, before Hockman hit two free throws to bring the deficit to four.  Corvino hit a free throw to put it to five at the end of the third.

The fourth proved to be a defensive battle on both ends.  Neither team scored for the first two minutes, until W&L extended the lead to 10.  Johnson hit a jumper, but the teams traded points shortly after.   Harris then cut the deficit to seven with three minutes left, but the WildCats would get no closer as Washington and Lee won the contest.

Harris led the 'Cats with a game-high 17 points.  Hockman added eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.  The team did a great job of protecting the ball, having only six turnovers in the game.  Emily Perszyk led three Generals (11-9 overall, 6-5 ODAC) in double-figures.  Perszyk had 14, while Emma Redding and Ailyn Kelly each had 12.

Randolph (4-16 overall, 2-9 ODAC) ends its road trip on Saturday with another ODAC matchup.  The WildCats will play at Emory & Henry College (14-5, 8-3) with the game slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
